Winner of nine Tony awards and one of the longest running shows ever to have
played on Broadway, the exhilarating, inspiring and much loved musical that is
Fiddler on the Roof returns to UK theatres starring stage and screen favourite
Joe McGann. Best known for his role as Charlie Burrows in ITV sitcom The Upper
Hand, Joe plays the lead role of Jewish dairyman Tevye, who dreams of riches,
respect and a quiet family life.
In a Jewish village in Czarist Russia, Tevye is doing his best to preserve
tradition in the face of a changing world, but when his daughters refuse the
matchmaker’s advice and marry for love, Tevye must choose between their
happiness and those beloved traditions.
Fiddler on the Roof is blessed with a gloriously rousing score full of memorable
melodies, which, bound by a moving and compelling storyline, heart-warming
humour and colourful characters, Jerome Robbins’ dramatic original choreography,
wonderfully evocative sets and costumes and sheer joie de vivre, make this the
musical to take to your hearts.
Songs include Tradition, Matchmaker Matchmaker, Sunrise Sunset and the
irrepressible favourite If I Were a Rich Man. In addition to his TV credits, Joe
McGann recently starred as Nathan Detroit in the UK tour of Guys & Dolls and
most recently as one of the three Magi in the BBC’s Liverpool Nativity, a modern
musical version of the Christmas story.
Produced by Peter Frosdick and Martin Dodd for UK Productions, Fiddler on the
Roof is directed by Julian Woolford, with choreography by Chris Hocking and
Musical Supervision by Gareth Williams. Set design is by Charles Camm, with
costumes by Elizabeth Dennis, lighting design by David Howe and sound design by
Ross Portway and Jon Higson. Fiddler on the Roof has book by Joseph Stein, music
by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick.
Fiddler on the Roof opens at the Pavilion Theatre, Bournemouth on Tuesday 17
June and runs until Saturday 21 June.
