The UK’s fastest growing sport brings together
record numbers to compete in Bournemouth

Cheerleading; the fastest growing sport in the UK has seen unprecedented growth in the past few years. Now taught in education providers of all ages, many schools find it engages students that would normally steer clear of P.E. and the clubs it offers. The stereotype often portrayed is at odds with the dedicated and athletic nature of many of its participants. Athletes benefit from increased self confidence, physical exercise and the development of practical team and interpersonal skills.

Cheerleading really has become a sport for all, especially with the development of Special Needs Cheerleading and Dance. These incredible athletes compete with their contemporaries in a supportive and inclusive atmosphere. Two UK Special Needs teams have recently returned from the World Cheerleading Championships, where they performed in front of a roaring crow d and proud home supporters. These teams along with 3 able bodied teams were able to represent their country on the world stage due to bid awarded by Future Cheer at their 2009 International Championships.

Future Cheer, the UK’s largest Cheerleading and Dance Event Producers, are holding their 2010 International Cheerleading and Dance Championships this June at the BIC (Bournemouth International Centre).  Usually home to political conferences, this venue will host over 6,000 competitors over the two day competition. The sheer growth of this emerging industry has driven the need for two days of competition in an all-purpose venue.
Coach Joey Gamper shares her Future Cheer experience: “I love the atmosphere, it’s electric, and you feel such a sense of achievement when you come off the mat to the roaring crowds. They always try to go that extra mile with the competition experience. My favourite memory of FC Internationals -  I sat in the crowd as a spectator and thought to myself, one day I’m going to have my own squad and we’re going to win this competition … four years later I do … and we did!” The 2010 teams including Joey’s London based adult team will have over 5,000 spectators to impress as well as the judges!

“Future Cheer Internationals is a well-run and organized competition,” comments American Head Judge Karen Halterman, “FC goes above and beyond to make sure the experience is the best it could be for the competitors.”  Coach Anna Jackson, of Stars Elite based in Solihull recalls her experience, “The backdrop was breathtaking and seeing literally thousands of people watching is amazing and reminiscent of walking on to the mat when I competed in the USA—it makes you feel like a super star!”
